Legend To Perform At "Capital Ball" - Fundraiser for historic Trenton landmark
|
TRENTON, NJ (February 1, 2008) The Old Barracks, a State and National Landmark and a witness to the critical Battle of Trenton, has announced the creation of "The Semiquincentennial Celebration" in honor of the 250th anniversary of the building's construction.
In honor of this important anniversary, the Old Barracks annual "Capital Ball" has been rechristened "The Semiquincentennial Ball." This black-tie fundraiser will be held on April 26, 2008, and will include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at the Old Barracks, a procession to the Trenton War Memorial led by the Old Barracks Fife & Drum Corps, and an evening of dining, dancing and celebration with entertainment provided by Johnny Pompadour & the Full Grown Men.
Also in honor of the 250th anniversary, the Old Barracks has recently re-launched its informational website, www.barracks.org, to keep the public apprised of the many events to be included on the calendar throughout 2008.
"This is truly a momentous year for the Old Barracks," stated Richard Patterson, Director of the Old Barracks. "Two hundred and fifty years is a long time for any building, let alone one in an urban setting that has seen the history that the Old Barracks has. Little did anyone know in 1758 that the course of history would change right at this building's door. Or that the building would go on to become an educational center that would teach hundreds of thousands of Americans the importance of our history. We are honored and delighted by the support we have received over the years to keep this building going, and we're excited to invite all our friends to come celebrate this important anniversary with us.
To be held on April 26, 2008, at the Old Barracks Museum and the Trenton War Memorial. For tickets, advertising and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Carolyn Cudnik at 609-396-1776.
In 1758, during the French and Indian War, the Old Barracks was constructed by the Colony of New Jersey. British soldiers were housed here until 1776. In December, 1776, American forces, retreating from a year-long series of defeats in New Jersey, crossed the Delaware southward into Pennsylvania to escape the British army. Then, on Christmas night, American troops under General Washington re-crossed the river north into New Jersey, winning a stunning victory the next morning over British and Hessian troops housed in the Old Barracks. This success, together with victories at a second Battle of Trenton and at Princeton in the subsequent ten days, marked the turning point of the American Revolution. Independence would be gained in 1781.
At the conclusion of the Revolution, the Barracks housed American troops and also served as a military hospital. The building later fell into disrepair, until in 1902 it was purchased by local preservationists, and then by the State of New Jersey in 1914. It was fully restored in 1915-1916 and again in 1995-1998.
Today, the Old Barracks retains its original 1758 structure. Open daily, 10 AM until 5 PM, the award-winning Old Barracks staff provides daily tours and interpretations of American colonial life. The building also offers a museum of artifacts and weapons, as well a marvelous gift shop.

MCCC Gets It Done! - Pompadour plays PA part in soccer win.
WEST WINDSOR -- The key to any successful junior college program lies within its newcomers, since turnover is so rapid at a two-year school. So it's not surprising that Mercer County Community Colleges soccer team has opened defense of its NJCAA national championship with key contributions from two rookies.
The legendary Johnny Pompadour, "Central Jerseys King of Rock n Roll," has taken over as public address announcer and gives the Vikings a charismatic voice behind the microphone. And, probably even more importantly, freshman Anthony Moy has provided a potent scorer up front.
Although the two have never met, Pompadour belted out Moys name three times last night, as the Montgomery High product netted his first collegiate hat trick in helping Mercer to a 5-2 victory over Globe Institute of Technology from midtown Manhattan. "Some kudos to (Princeton University coach) Jimmy Barlow, hes on Jimmys club team," coach Charlie Inverso said of Moy. "Anthonys done a nice job for us. Its a nice pick-up for us. He comes from a good program at Montgomery so hes well schooled."
Moy, who had one goal in MCCCs season-opening win over Delaware Tech last Thursday, gave the Vikings (2-0) a 1-0 lead when he headed in the rebound after the goalie mishandled Tom Fink's hard shot. Refael Segal, another freshman, helped expand the advantage to 3-0. The Israeli sent a beautiful pass in to Awel Mohammed, who converted easily, then scored his own goal on a direct kick.
In the second half, Moy was stoned on a great save, but finished a banner night by converting feeds from Rahav Yacob and Felix Martey. "Playing with this group of guys is good for me, being young," Moy said. "And it's just good soccer. I feel comfortable, this is the type of soccer I like to play."I was recruited by a lot of Division I schools but academically this was right for me. I'll still keep in touch with those college coaches and see what happens after the year."
Strewn in between Moy's final two goals were a pair by Globe's Roland White, which had Inverso somewhat miffed. "We've had some good days of practice and some pretty good games until we got a 4-0 lead," said Inverso, who is still missing three of his top players because their paperwork is not complete. "I guess that's human nature when you get a lead like that, you get a tendency to sit back a little bit."
Only one of the goals came against Steinert grad Tom DeStefano, and that was on a penalty kick. DeStefano made five saves, a couple of them outstanding. The Vikes will need the same kind of effort over the next four days, as they host Catonsville, a national final 8 team last year, tomorrow, before traveling to Massachusetts for games against Dean and perennial thorn Massasoit Saturday and Sunday. "I think we have a pretty good team, we're still missing three pretty key guys," Inverso said. "I guess after this weekend we'll see where we're at."
And at each home game, Johnny Pompadour will let them hear exactly where they're at.
